Nerve Testing

Nerve Testing

When it comes to potential nerve damage, there are two basic tests your doctor may order to detect improper nerve function. Whether you are experiencing generalized weakness of the arms and legs, tingling or numbness in the extremities, or a pinched nerve in the back, these tests can help your physician diagnose the problem and choose the appropriate course of action

Nerve Testing

1. Nerve Conduction Test

Since nerves are electrical impulses which are constantly sending messages throughout your frame, nerve conduction test will use electrodes, placed along your body to measure how well the nerves communicate with each other. A nerve conduction test is often used for generalized weakness of the arms and legs and will help find any damage to your peripheral nervous system. It may be used to help diagnose problems such as carpal tunnel syndrome or more serious nerve damage.

2. Electromyogram Test

The electromyogram test measures the electrical activity found with the muscles of the body at rest as well as during contractions. It is often used for tingling or numbness found within the extremities. This test may also help diagnose myasthenia gravis, herniated discs and amyotophic lateral sclerosis.
